Week 15 Final Reflections on Course

Please use this opportunity to reflect on a theme or concept we discussed in this course about capitalism. This may be something that intrigued you, that was new to you, or that you felt you learnt more about.

  1. Something that really intrigued me throughout the course was the historical basis for the majority of the things that we were reading about in contemporary works. Even back in the first weeks of the course when we were assigned the Atlantic article, I was surprised and interested by the historical basis going back decades for the usage of those terms. Understanding the terms' usage since then to now makes analyzing our economy and culture surrounding it even more effective.

  2. A section of our course that stood out to me was discussing the effect that late stage capitalism has on areas of the world that are not particularly custom to using it. This was in the article that reference the factories in Malaysia. The ideals of countries that did not entirely understand their customs and beliefs made them work in conditions that did not work for them. This made me think about how late stage capitalism is effecting people all around the world. And, how it effects people in more 'modern' countries because these policies are certain to not effect everyone the same.

  3. Something that I will always remember from this course will probably be the history of tea and sugar, and maybe someday I will even have the opportunity to tell the story of how sugar and tea spread and became popular to someone if they ask why tea is known as such a popular British drink.
I also liked learning about late capitalism, since before taking this class I had seen the subreddit for posts about the topic and I had even watched the juicer video that we watched in class, and so after we discussed and learned about it in class, the topic made a lot more sense to me.
